Consumers have rated Dublin-based Ryanair as the worst short-haul airline.

The news comes via a recent survey conducted by consumer group Which?, in which readers gave the budget airline score of just 35 in overall satisfaction, earning it the last-place position among 16 air carriers.

Which? officials said that the results were based on the opinions of more than 5,500 passengers who were asked to rate airlines in several different categories: seating assignments, value for money, boarding process, food and beverage, baggage policies and punctuality.

Ryanair scored very low in every category except punctuality. A spokesman said on behalf of Which? that the group was “inundated” with negative comments about the Irish low-cost firm, notably in regards to extra charges. He added that such fees likely had a major contribution to the carrier’s one-star ratings in boarding arrangements, baggage and food and drinks categories.

Meanwhile, Swiss International earned the top position in the survey via an overall satisfaction score of 82 per cent. Turkish Airlines came in second place at 78 per cent, whilst Lufthansa grabbed third, Aer Lingus took fourth and Dutch airline KLM took the fifth place position.
