New York’s LaGuardia airport began hosting flights again on Thursday in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Reports said that several airlines have boosted their schedules from the Queens, New York airport in an effort to finally accommodate thousands of stranded passengers. The move marks the re-launch of last of the region’s main airports after the ‘superstorm’ crippled the area’s transport system early in the week.

Officials from LaGuardia said the airport was not able to open as quickly as nearby JFK and other area gateways because the facility’s runways lie on the Long Island Sound and had been inundated by floodwaters for several days.

Pasquale DiFulco said on behalf of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey – which operates the airport – that Thursday would still be “a little slow” whilst carriers begin to reposition aircraft and crewmembers at LaGuardia.

New York City’s two largest airports – JFK and Newark Liberty – had resumed operations on Wednesday and DiFulco told media that his organsiation expects that both will “be close to 100 per cent” by the end of the day on Thursday or early Friday.

Meanwhile, carriers continue to advise passengers to check ahead before heading to LaGuardia; a Jetblue spokesman said that the airline has moved all of its LaGuardia services to JFK for the time being, whilst Delta and American are operating limited service at the airport, according to reports.
