Charity organisation Age UK is urging Britons to include insurance whilst making travel plans.

The group’s managing director Gordon Morris said in a statement that elderly travellers especially need to take the time to arrange proper cover before setting out. He said that by booking last minute, it’s easy to make a mistake in choosing the right policy and that many providers now carry limitations for those in their pension years.

The news follows the recent survey results from Abta2, which revealed that around 20 per cent of all British travellers head abroad with no coverage whatsoever. Experts say this can be a costly mistake in the event of health problems or accidents whist overseas. And despite extended life experience, around 16 per cent of those 65 or older admit to travelling without cover.

Industry experts say that many chose to forgo taking out cover because they are not aware that a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) does not cover every need when things go wrong, notably the often sky-high cost of repatriation.

Mr Morris went on to say that those buying insurance should be sure to check each policy carefully before purchase by reading the small print and looking for extra fees, cancellation charges and exceptions.
