A recent survey has shown that millions of Canadian travellers have never purchased travel insurance.

The figures come via a new report published this week by American Express Canada, which revealed that 30 per cent of all respondents have never insured their journeys, whilst the figure for Canadians aged from 18 to 34 years is 42 per cent.

The report also revealed that many travellers from the North American country are perhaps unwilling to admit that they intend to travel without cover, as some 59 per cent reported they will be taking out a policy for their next trip. This was despite most of the respondents (61 per cent) defining themselves as non risk-takers.

American Express Canada’s insurance director Jeff Gladwish said in a statement that the amount of people willing to travel without cover was surprising for a country that apparently views itself as being cautious. He added that many choose to take their chances because they are unaware that provincial health care systems do not cover many medical expenses travellers may encounter whilst aboard.

But the study may have also revealed that scepticism among policies was the largest reason for deterring Canadians from coverage; 71 per cent said they’re generally unaware if they’re getting a good deal, whilst 65 per cent said they don’t know how to compare polices and 66 per cent said they don’t understand the language in travel insurance paperwork.
