The company said this week in a press release that it would begin service between Portland International Airport (PDX) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), as well as between Portland and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) beginning 5 June.

There will be two nonstop flights per day in each direction to both cities and tickets will go on sale today, officials said.

Virgin America markets itself as a “fresh” alternative to traditional carriers in the US market and offers amenities such a mood lighting, custom cabin designs and touchscreen seatback entertainment in all classes.

The move by the firm marks the latest in a series of growth efforts, despite numerous other US airlines trimming back capacity in recent months. Passengers flying to and from Portland can also look forward to lower fares, as statistcs show that when VA enters a new market that airfares on the route drop substantially, “frequently” by as much as 30 per cent, according to Virgin officials.

The new follows the recent announcement that Virgin was also seeking to soon launch a new route between Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport and the San Francisco Bay Area.
