A critically ill British man has been flown home from Bali after his parents borrowed some £80,000 to pay for an air ambulance. Richard Plummer, who is 32 years old and from Maidstone in Kent, has been stuck in a coma since he was in a motorcycle accident on the holiday island of Bali.

His parents were forced to borrow money to pay for the expensive repatriation flight because he had failed to renew his travel insurance. His parents were worried their son could end up dying in Indonesia if they were unable to pay for his emergency repatriation.

Mr Plummer ended up in a coma following a motorcycle crash on 1 July. His parents have already had to spend their life savings of £20,000 to cover the fee for their son’s care after he failed to renew his holiday cover. Mr Plummer has lived in Bali since 2009.

A German paramedic was said to be accompanying Mr Plummer on the flight. The plane left Bali at 4.40BST is flying to Stansted airport, via Sri Lanka, the UAE and Turkey.

The flight was made possible after an anonymous benefactor loaned Mr Plummer’s parents £80,000 to pay for the air ambulance. Mr Plummer’s father provided no details about the exact lending arrangements, other than to say that the family home was at risk unless they pay back the loan.
