Holidaymakers in Europe and Latin America will enjoy an expanded set of options when it comes to African air travel, thanks to the merger of British Airways (BA) and Iberia Airlines.

Speaking on Wednesday, BA chief executive Willie Walsh said the airline would extend its operations into Africa. BA will receive new aircraft in 2012, with which it will boost African flight frequencies.

The merger gives BA access to passengers flying from the Spanish market to Africa. One of the big destinations will be Kenya.

BA will leverage Iberia Airlines’ existing strengths in Latin American markets with an expanded network in Africa.

Boeing’s 787 airliner will play a big role, Walsh seeing it as an excellent choice for serving flights into Africa from Spanish markets, such as Madrid. Using the 787, he expects to be able to increase flight frequencies and support new destinations in Africa.

The region’s tourism has taken a big hit in the global economic downturn. Adding extra flights is expected to boost regional tourism in Africa.

Starting in June, east Africa should see an influx of travellers on their way to and returning from the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
