The Canadian Transportation Agency has issued advice to Skyservice ticketholders after the airline announced yesterday that it would be stopping operations immediately. Many travellers already booked with the airline have been left wondering what to do since the company folded due to financial difficulties.

Those with travel insurance have been told to check with their provider to see if their policy covers such a scenario. Those already in transit are also advised to call their travel agent or tour operator or arrange alternative transport.

If you have tickets for future travel dates, it is also a good idea to keep the receipts, as you may be able to claim these back from your insurers at a later date. Receipts from expenses incurred during alternative travel arrangements, such as meals, may also be worth hanging on to. People who booked tickets in British Columbia, Quebec or Ontario may also be eligible for compensation under provincial laws.

The news of the sudden death of Skyservice came early on Wednesday morning. In a statement to the press, the popular charter, which has been in operation for 15 years, said it was forced to shut down due to changes in the Canadian holiday market and debt problems.

The airline had a fleet of 20 planes and employed around 1,200 people, running charter flights for Signature Vacations and SunQuest. Many Skyservice passengers found themselves stranded on Wednesday morning as they waited for replacement flights to be provided. All of SunQuest’s passengers have now been assigned to new aircraft.
