In a survey out this week it was revealed that 70% of British tourists did not know that they could have to foot their bill for medical expenses if they were drunk when an accident happens. Furthermore, 80% admitted to getting very drunk while on their summer holidays.

Some insurers will refuse to pay out if you injure yourself while drunk. Currently there is no limit that insurers label as too much alcohol but instead assess each case individually. Obviously when on holiday it is a time to relax and let your hair down and a lot of people will do this by having a drink. The message they want to get out is the same as in the UK; drink responsibly.

The message does not just go for alcohol consumption though; they are urging travellers to take care with personal items such as passports, mobile phones and cameras which have the strongest rejection for insurance claims.

Around 28% of alcohol claims arise from personal injury like falls down stairs or moped accidents. Also on average 19% of claims were due to fighting and the hospital bills that ensued.

Hospitals in European countries can cost up to £1,300 per day for insurers and if they refuse to pay, that cost will carry to you. The message is simple; think twice and act responsibly.
