Many people returning from a scorching bank holiday outing were held up on the M25 as two bulls and a heifer ran amok on both carriageways, near Sevenoaks in Kent. Emergency services had to close the motorway in both directions for almost three hours on Monday night.

A three-mile tailback caused many motorists to get out of their vehicles to see what all the fuss was about. “Being the end of the bank holiday, the roads were particularly busy, so it was not a good time for this to happen. But it did mean there was quite an audience”, said a Highways Agency spokesperson.

The two bullocks quickly escaped into a nearby field when police arrived but the heifer was not party to this and decided she wanted to have some fun. After wandering around one carriageway, she simply stepped over the central reservation and decided on a jolly the other side until a vet finally arrived to sedate her.

The cattle escaped after the box in which they were being carried overturned between Junctions 5 and 6 just before 7 pm. The heifer was removed safely but the two bulls stayed overnight in their new field until they were collected the next day.
