The survey, in which more than 12,600 people participated, was carried out during the period of voting for the 2008 British Travel Awards, in the autumn of last year. Over 90,000 votes were cast in the awards voting.

Of those participating, 26.5 per cent indicated that they prefer to book a holiday package because it is easier because they expect to save money if they book early.

Quite a small number – 6.45 per cent - said they use an established agent or travel operator for their holiday booking, as they don’t feel that booking elements separately is safe.

In the more than 12,600 surveys that were completed, 29 per cent of those participating reported that they booked all of their holiday elements online, and independently.

Approximately 47 per cent of the consumers responding to the study indicated that they would book at least one element of their next holiday independently, and that might be a flight, a hotel, car hire, an airport transfer or an excursion.

The participants in the survey came mostly from audiences of The Sun and The Sunday Times, CD-Traveller, Sky Travel, TripAdvisor and LBC Radio.
