The body of Derek Cowan, a 46-year-old Scots, originally from Lanarkshire, was found in his apartment on 8 October, in a pool of blood.

Spanish police had placed a statement on their website indicating that the results of a post-mortem examination will help determine whether Cowan had been murdered.

"I can confirm the death of Derek Cowan, aged 46, in Spain,” a spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said. "Next-of-kin have been informed in the UK. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office are in contact with the Spanish authorities who are looking into this."

Cowan was raised in Lanarkshire and attended Lanark Grammar School and also Larkhall Academy, according to his profile on Friends Reunited website. He settled in Spain a few years ago.

Cowan also made an entry on the site that spoke of his being resident in Spain: "Have travelled extensively, living in London, Manila and now settled (for the time being) in Barcelona. Living with Spanish girlfriend and working as a currency trader in the sun."

It has been reported that Cowan owned his business, which he operated with a German partner.
