A recent survey conducted by American Express reports that around 14.5 million UK travellers will likely risk going on holiday abroad over the next year without having adequate travel insurance.

This information came to light from a larger study conducted on financial safeguards, which saw nearly half of all Britons looking at ways of saving money by cutting back on various types of financial protections, including travel insurance.

An American Express spokesman, Chris Rolland, emphasized that cutting back on financial safeguards was particularly not advisable given current economic conditions. He added that travellers, without cover, would not have the necessary funds for medical expenses abroad or repatriation should that be necessary.

"Should something happen, the current economic market means that the last thing Brits need now is an unexpected bill," Rolland said.

The credit crunch is affecting consumers negatively and is also having a negative impact on the travel industry. Several travel operators and airlines have gone out of business recently, leaving thousands of holidaymakers stranded abroad, in circumstances that make adequate travel insurance all that more important.
