Travelling by ferry is seeing a resurgence in popularity with many people in the UK, largely due to its convenience.

In 2007, over 15 million passengers travelled through the Port of Dover, and in January of this year an increase of 1.1 per cent over last January's figures gave an early indication of a strong year ahead for ferry travel.

The Port of Dover’s public relations manager, Mike Southey, said that he believes there is some backlash against the “cheap flights” that have ended up cost travellers additional time and inconvenience.

”We think [ferry travel] is regaining popularity after a period of a few years when there seemed to be a small shift towards airline journeys. It's very much a smoother and easier passage through a seaport than an airport,” he explained.

Southey added that lengthy security queues were also contributing to the move back to ferry service for some travellers.

UK travellers who are driving and taking the ferry to their holiday destinations are being reminded to ensure that their travel insurance policies provide adequate cover, following a warning by the AA last week about holidaymakers heading away by car making some erroneous assumptions about what was covered in the event of accident or theft.
