Travel industry experts are stressing to UK holidaymakers that there are a number of factors they should take into account before they actually head off on the annual overseas summer holidays – including their travel cover.

Regardless of the risk of facing emergency medical bills that could lead to bankruptcy and the theft of valuable personal items, millions of UK travellers, to save a few pounds, leave for their annual breaks underinsured, and sometimes totally uninsured.

The UK Foreign Office has estimated that the cost of an air ambulance from the east coast of the US runs between £35,000 and 45,000, which is not an amount that most holiday travellers are prepared to pay out-of-pocket.

Without having proper travel insurance, holidaymakers open themselves to exposure to this type of massive expense, and experts recommend that travel insurance be purchased at the same time the holiday itself is booked.

Given the uncertainty of the economy and the possibility of becoming unemployed, it’s also important to have travel insurance that covers the cost of holiday cancellation given this or other unforeseen circumstances that prohibit travel.
