Cancellations and delays affect those travelling by plane and car.

Travel Insurance News - 25/12/2007

A dense layer of fog over many parts of England delayed travel plans for holidaymakers, causing flights to be cancelled and motorways to become backed up with traffic.

Heathrow was forced to cancel 86 flights, while City Airport cancelled 30 departure flights and about 30 arrival flights. Gatwick cancelled a total of 21 flights.

Low visibility on the motorways caused a 16-car pile-up on the M5, with accident-caused traffic delays on the M23 and M25 as well. Several sections of other motorways were affected by the fog, causing severe delays.

Train services were running on a normal schedule, offering a convenient option for travellers.

A Virgin Rail spokesperson said: 'Our trains are running normally and there are still seats available. We'll do everything we can to help.'
