Last year many European winter sports resorts were struggling to offer their paying guests enough snow to keep them happy. As a result many resorts invested in snow making machines whilst others had theirs working flat out to coat their slopes with artificial snow. This year it is a different story as many winter sport resorts have witnessed heavy snow falls enabling them to begin their seasons early. The snow making machines are still being employed but not in desperation, this time they are aiding the real stuff and ensuring complete coverage for what should be one of the best ski and snow boarding seasons for many years.
Austria has seen some of the the heaviest snow falls and many of the most well known slopes such as Schladming, Obergurgl, St Anton and Kitzbuhel have already or are about to open. Many areas are seeing records broken as heavy falls of up to three feet of snow continue to fall catching some areas unawares and unable to open their hotels fast enough. In the Swiss resort of Grisons around three foot of snow fell breaking a 55 year old record for the start of November. The down side of so much snow so rapidly is the increased threat of avalanches
