Ban on hand luggage lifted at some airports

Travel Insurance News - 15/11/2007

Ruth Kelly the Transport Secretary has said that some UK airports could be relaxing the ban on more than one item hand luggage by January.

She said that "Simply lifting the one bag rule at all UK airports now would not be sensible. Too many airports have still not got the necessary screening capacity in place to maintian appropriate security standards". She then went on to say "Waiting until every airport is ready to adopt the new regime would penalise passengers using the rest of the network. I am not prepared to move at the pace of the slowest. Our approach is designed to make maximum use of extra capacity as it becomes available, so we can pass the benefits on to the passenger as quickly as possible". She said that she expects to be able to lift the ban on more than one bag from January 7th once airports have submitted suitable plans to its security arm Transec.

The Transport Secretary said that she expected all UK airports to submit plans during the next few months. Restrictions on liquids will not be lifted.
