New machines can detect explosives and liquid.

Travel Insurance News - 04/10/2007

BAA is to spend more than £20 million on new advanced x-ray machines that can automatically detect explosives in hand luggage. The installation will reduce the risks of bombs being smuggled and help pave the way for a relaxation of the one piece of hand luggage rule.

The machines were tested at Heathrow's new Terminal 5, 11 machines have already been installed. Heathrow will be the first airport in the world to install the machines and hopes to have machines operating in all of its terminals by spring 2008. BAA hope to have the machines in all of its seven airports including Gatwick and Glasgow. The installation will incorporate an Advanced Threat Identification X-ray (aTiX) facility that allows detection of explosives and liquids. A red box appears around a suspicious area as it is projected on a screen for the person watching. The machine scans a bag from several angles and provides far clearer images of its contents.
