Tourists killed in elephant atacks

Travel Insurance News - 21/09/2007

The recent killing of tourists in the game parks of Namibia has caused concern to the country's tourism minister Willem Konjore, he has issued a formal warning to visitors of game parks to take greater care with their safety. Since 2000 dozens of people, including four Britons, have been killed by elephants. The rescent killings of four people in six weeks in the Caprivi region in the northeast and Kunene in the nortwest have highlighted the problem and resulted in a warning not to disturb elephants at any time in any way especially at night time.

The problems with elephants have been highlighted through drought, which forces the animals closer to water near villages, an encroachment of domestic livestock and their herdsmen disrupting the elephants migration routes as well as unguided tourists wandering around. Reports of tourists reving their engines and blowing their horns to increase activity from elephants have caused the animals to retaliate.
