Staying free at the holiday homes of friends and familiy is saving the British public around £4 billion a year. A study carried out by Barclays and the research company YouGov, has highlighted the financial advantage to the keen holiday maker with access to free accommodation abroad. There has been a huge increase in the volumn of homes bought abroad and this has resulted in one in ten people whoe responded to the survey admitting that they continue a friendship purely on the basis that they are able to stay free of charge in the home abroad.

The survey found that 53 per cent of people offer only a very small token of their appreciation such as a bottle of wine or a box of chocolates as a thank you. Almost half those taking part said they would help themselves to food in the cupboards and 36 per cent went as far as helping themselves to their hosts alcohol.
