Parents take children out of school to enjoy travel.

Travel Insurance News - 14/09/2007

Kevin Brennan, the Schools Minister has voiced his concern regarding the number of school days lost to children who are taken out of school to go on holiday. He has called on travel companies to keep prices at a more competitive level during the holiday seasons. He pointed out that "no cut price deal is worth harming a child's education for". The minister was making this point as truancy rates are reported to have reached a new high with the problem about to get worse as next Easter falls early increasing the chances that parents will be reluctant to return their children to school for the four days that fall between the Bank Holiday and the start of the holidays.

The problem is highlighted as there is no national standard school year calender forcing parents with children at schools in differing authorities to pull their childrenout of schools when planning holidays. Almost 3.7 million days are lost to truancy in each term.

Term time holidays add to truancy figures
