The next few months will see a programme of more efficient security procedures and checks. The overhaul is planned to prevent a repetition of the chaos that followed the warnings of a possible terrorist attack on August 10.
The improvements will include new security lanes and secure areas which will be able to accommodate longer queues. More efficient scanning equipment and metal detectors will also be installed along with hundreds more staff at Heathrow alone. Criticism was leveled against BAA by major airlines such as BA and Ryanair for its rule changes affecting hand luggage allowances as well as increase in body searches which caused severe problems for travellers in the summer.
Unlike large airports such as Heathrow or Gatwick, smaller airports have to fund their own security arrangements and this is an added burden to police forces. The Greater Manchester police force responsible for Leeds Bradford Airport is currently asking that passengers should be asked to pay an extra 50pence per ticket to cover the cost of hightened security.
