A recent report by a leading travel insurer has found that British holidaymakers travelling abroad are often being given excessive medical treatment when suffering from minor illnesses or accidents.

The insurer Europ Assistance has recorded an excessive number of high claims from travellers holidaying in Bulgaria, Spain, Dominican Republic and Greece. The cost of medical assistance can often be three times what it should be with people given unnecessary treatment and being over diagnosed. The cost to insurance companies and to the travellers themselves is rising as clinics give full body xrays, intravenous drips and overnight stays with trips in expensive ambulances all contributing to the rise in premiums. Some patients have also been given general anaesthetics without refering to the patients medical history and in some cases have endured additional unnecessary surgery whilst recovering.
