Winter sports enthusiasts should make doubly sure that their insurance cover is sufficient and includes special cover for such sports as zorbing, surf kiting and parapente, the latter involving having a parachute strapped to your back as you ski off a ledge! A spokesperson for the Ski Club of Great Britain has said that holidaymakers should check the small print on their policy documents to make sure they will be covered for the types of activity they will be taking part in. Her worry is that consumers relying on their annual travel insurance may not be sufficiently covered and unfortunately find they are not insured if they have an accident. Skiing and snowboarding are usually covered on a basic policy but if the intention is to take part in other activities such as dog sledging or ski school races you should ask for a separate endorsement to be added. If you are going to ski 'off piste' you should check that the cover offered from your insurance company complies with the type of off piste skiing you are planning. Off piste can have different meanings.

Snowboarders are one and a half times more likely to injure themselves than skiers and in a group of skiers one in thirty will suffer an injury, one in ten of those injuries will be due to a collision with another person. Add that to the fact that figures suggest that one in seven go on holiday without cover, there are a lot of poorer injured holiday makers out of pocket when they return home. The average cost of of a helicopter rescue in Europe is £1,800 and a daily hospital charge will increase that by £400.
