The US authorities have eased the rules on taking liquids and gels on to flights, European authorities will follow suit later this year. Further confusion could occur as charter airlines have said that the hand baggage allowed under new department for Transport guidelines issued on September 22nd, will not fit in the lockers of their aircraft. Thomas Cook Airlines said that the acceptable baggage size for their craft only allows for luggage measuring up to 15in by 10in by 8in and not 20in by 16in by 9in. First Choice Airlines sid that their aircraft would not have room for the bags allowed by the Department for Transport and they would need to go in the hold. The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said that with immediate effect, passengers flying east across the Atlantic could carry travel-size toiletries which weigh three ounces or less that fit into clear plastic, zip top bags. Items such as drinks bought in the departure lounge are also allowed on.
A meeting held with transport officials from the European Union have agreed to allow a relaxation of the rules for passengers departing from EU airports. Passengers, from November, will be permitted to travel on board with toothpaste, contact lense solution and travel-sized medicine.
