President Bush has given the go ahead to creat a huge marine sanctuary on the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and its surrounding waters. Covering an area of 1,400 miles long by 100 wide, the sanctury in the Pacific Ocean will protect various species including the endangered monk seal and nesting green sea turtles. The area is home to over 7,000 species of wild life and many are not found elsewhere.
It is the US's 75th national monument and sets aside around 140 thousand miles of uninhabited Islands and coral reefs. The area will be given immediate protection and start with a five year phasing out period of fishing permits in the area under protection. Around 130,000 miles of the marine area is already designated as a coral reef ecosystem reserve.
