The traditional summer break remains the main vacation experience for UK residents, but cheaper prices and the greater accessibility of overseas trips means that its monopoly has been shaken.
According to the Post Office Travel Insights survey, 43 per cent of Britons intend to take a summer break this year, but 35 per cent aim to supplement it with a short break, usually at another point in the year.
Cheaper flight options helped Europe retain its place as the main holiday destination, accounting for 43 per cent of all trips last year, while the number of people planning a break in the UK has started to slide, from 34 per cent last year to 30 per cent expected in 2006.
"This year looks set to be a bumper year for travel with over 30 million of us planning to take a holiday - 1.1 million more than 2005," said Hugh Stacey, head of travel services at the Post Office.
He suggested that with a fashion for cheap breaks outside the summer creeping in, consumers could look to an annual travel insurance policy to obtain "real financial and time savings and give peace of mind for the whole year".
Consumers can check out a range of competitive travel insurance deals by looking online.
