Britons unaware of travel cost dangers Travel Insurance News - 21/03/2006

A new study claims that Britons are in danger of losing out through their failure to take travel insurance to cover medical emergencies.
Research by Tesco Travel Insurance indicates that more than 2.5 million travellers do not take out cover because they do not think it will be needed, with those embarking on mini breaks proving especially unconcerned about the risks.
Others were under the impression that the new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which replaced the old E111 in January, would offer a complete substitute for travel cover.
However, this deal does not provide for certain treatments and services in many countries and it also fails to cover the cost of being flown home in a medical emergency, which can run up to £20,000.
"Most people think that because a mini break is short, they don't need to insure themselves against accidents, thefts or cancellations," said Allan Burns, head of insurance at Tesco. "But our survey has shown that it is wise to do so."
"The cost of insurance is not high, but the cost of travelling uninsured could very well turn out to be," he added.
Travellers can check out a range of competitive travel insurance deals, suited to both long and mini breaks, by looking online.
