British travellers are increasingly looking to Italy as the source of adventurous walking holidays.

The country topped a poll by Rambler's Holidays, with respondents singling out the attractions of hikes to ancient hilltop cities, trips to the rugged Sorrento peninsula and treks through the higher ground and lake-land terrain of the Dolomites.

Within Europe, British travellers were still enthusiastic about trips to the perennial favourites of Spain, Greece and France, with each region said to be abounding in potential for coastal walks, mountain tours and visits to remote heritage sites.

Below them, Portugal moved into fifth place, with interest in the unspoilt national parks of the north beginning to redefine the country as a place for the intrepid, rather than just a haven of beaches and golf courses.

Outside Europe, the appeal of the Atlas mountains lifted Morocco into sixth place, with South Africa also calling in increasing numbers as Britons turn to the challenges of Table Mountain.

Britons exploring new destinations should make sure they get themselves covered with a travel insurance deal, which can be the best guard against emergencies in regions off the beaten track.
