Experts have warned that Britons are putting themselves at a significant disadvantage if they fail to take out travel insurance when venturing abroad.
Research by Sainsbury's bank reveals that over the past 12 months more than three million people travelled overseas without seeking essential cover in the event of an emergency.
Young people appear to be especially oblivious to the dangers, with 24 per cent of 16-24 year olds failing to take out insurance: a worrying sign considering the increased popularity of backpacking "gap" years.
However, those aged between 35 and 54 were far more wised up to the possibilities, with less than seven per cent failing to get themselves covered.
"Travel insurance is essential for anyone going abroad, even if they are just planning a long weekend," says Karen Preston, travel insurance manager for Sainsbury's Bank.
"Last year, we estimated that there could have been around 241,000 travel insurance claims for medical or hospital care alone."
Consumers planning an overseas break can investigate a wide variety of the best buys in travel insurance by looking online.
