British aviation officials have reiterated the need for holidaymakers to get themselves covered with the most effective travel insurance.
Representatives of ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing) protection scheme have warned that the popular "DIY" package holidays involving separate booking for flights and hotels can incur certain risks.
The danger with DIY holidays is that if key elements such as an airline or hotel fail, travellers could easily find themselves stranded abroad.
Last year, ATOL had to rescue 32,000 passengers who had been forced to find new accommodation without guidance, or were left having to pay more to get home.
"We believe consumers should be aware of the potential risks so that they can make an informed choice," said David Clover of ATOL.
To capitalise on the cheaper potential of DIY packages while also holidaying with greater peace of mind, consumers can investigate the best opportunities in travel insurance by looking online.
