The cost of sustaining an injury while travelling is on the up in some of the winter holiday destinations most popular with UK travellers.

With the Winter Olympics expected to trigger a boom in the numbers of Britons taking to the slopes, new data from Norwich Union issues a sobering warning about the price of venturing out without adequate travel insurance.

Treatment for a broken leg in the US will currently force a payment of £20,000 - five times the figure obtained from France.

Switzerland is the most expensive place in Europe to seek treatment after a serious fall, with an average cost of £6,000, followed by Austria at £5,000.

'People should remember to take out travel insurance with winter sports optional cover before hitting the slopes,' said Dawn McMullan, Norwich Union travel product manager.

'People want peace of mind when they're on holiday - they need to know that they'll be looked after in case of an accident,' she added.

Before heading to the mountains, it is well worth examining the variety of competitive deals in travel insurance, which can be located online.
