Those planning a winter break this year should consider the results of a recent study that claims snowboarding may be the safest way to hit the piste.
Research conducted by AA Travel Insurance suggests that snowboarding is actually safer than skiing and could mean cheaper travel insurance premiums.
Medical studies show that snowboarding injuries are usually relatively painless and tend to involve sprains rather than breaks because of the more laid back approach.
'Provided snowboarders are properly equipped, their legs are tightly bound to the board and protected, which leaves less opportunity for the flailing limb injuries which often happen with skiers,' says Alison Crossley, head of AA Travel Insurance.
She added: 'Boarding uses different skills and is also a slower way to cruise down the slopes, which leaves less chance for high speed crashes and collisions with other people.'
However, winter travellers are still being advised to make sure they have adequate travel insurance cover for even the safest of winter sports just in case the worst should happen and they end up requiring expensive medical treatment.
