British tourists are incurring increased risks of losses from airline failure by not getting properly insured, a committee of MPs has said.
The Commons transport committee cited last year's collapse of low-fare airline Eujet as an example of what can go wrong.
The industry's regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), said that a similar event in 2006 could now cost passengers up to £200 to return home to Britain.
The Department of Transport argued that the soundest decisions are left in the hands of consumers, who should maximise the increased insurance opportunities to give themselves effective cover.
'The dynamics of personal travel are changing,' a spokesman said. 'Consumers are now much more empowered to make their own arrangements and should likewise decide for themselves about any risk involved and the value of appropriate insurance.'
The increased number of business trips and short breaks has ensured that people now go abroad more frequently than ever before.
The need to be informed about the best deals in travel insurance has never been greater.
