British holidaymakers are being warned to make sure they take out a good quality travel insurance policy before going on a cruise.
With cruising now established as one of the most popular types of holiday for British travellers, American Express Travel Insurance is calling on the UK's holidaymakers to ensure that, should they choose to take a cruise, they take out suitable insurance cover.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services, warns that holidaymakers should not be complacent and think that they are less likely to need cover on a cruise than they would on other types of holiday.
She explained: 'When people are taken ill at sea and need urgent treatment, transportation from the cruise ship to the nearest hospital can be an added complication sometimes involving the use of an air ambulance.
'Without insurance, the cost of this alone is likely to run well into four if not five figures.'
American Express urges holidaymakers to check that there is not a shortfall between the value of their holiday and the claim limit for cancellation on their policy.
They are also strongly advised to make certain they are insured for the entire duration of the cruise, as many policies restrict the number of days per trip that can be spent out of the UK.
