Over six million people in the UK paid too much for their travel insurance last year, according to research from Sainsbury's Bank.

The bank said that 6.4 million people took more than one trip abroad during 2005 but they bought single trip cover each time instead of purchasing annual travel insurance to cover multiple trips.

An annual policy would save frequent foreign travellers a lot of money. Sainsbury's Bank calculated that a British family going to Europe three times during a year could lower their insurance costs by around a quarter if they got a policy to cover the whole year as opposed to cover for each trip.

According to the bank, 6.25 million Britons took two holidays abroad in 2005 and a further 10.1 million took more than two overseas breaks.

Karen Preston, travel insurance manager for Sainsbury's Bank, said: 'As people get excited about choosing where to go, they can often overlook the importance of choosing the right travel insurance policy or even forget to take out cover at all, especially when taking shorter weekend breaks.

'Before buying insurance, you should consider whether you are going to make multiple trips abroad as you could make a substantial saving by purchasing an annual policy instead of single cover for each trip.'
