This year, around 900,000 holidaymakers are to leave their homes behind and head off for a week or two in the mountains.

In light of this, Legal & General has compiled a report on holiday misconceptions, and how costly these errors in judgement can be.

In its new poll, 956 people were asked to estimate the value of their luggage and contents. Half of respondents guessed under £500 and 23 per cent said they didn't have any idea.

In reality, for someone heading off to the slopes, the value of their luggage and contents is close to £2,500 for just one person.

Taking out winter sports insurance means that if something does go wrong or you lose your belongings, you can claim for them under your travel insurance policy.

Garry Skelton, marketing director at Legal & General Insurance said: 'It is clear that holidaymakers seriously undervalue the contents of their luggage. Many of us forget the actual value of the suitcase itself.

'The accumulated value of all the contents is not fully appreciated as just a few items can soon add up, particularly if you like designer accessories.

'It is so important that holidaymakers check their insurance cover to make sure they have the cover they need, before they travel.'

The report also says that skiing injuries can prove costly, with a tumble on the slopes adding up to £1,000 or more.
