Snow isn't the only thing falling on mountainsides this year, as new research suggests that the cost of skiing holidays is dropping too.

According to American Express Foreign Exchange's annual survey, the price of a skiing trip has fallen in six of the top ten winter sports destinations.

Resorts in France and Austria experienced the biggest decreases, with Courchevel 1850, seeing price cuts of 23 per cent, compared to last year.

The cost of a shopping basket of items, including ski and boot hire, lift passes, meals and drinks and fell in Austria's resort of Obergurgl by 18 per cent.

Katrina Harrison, American Express travel vice president, Europe said: 'This is the biggest increase recorded in our survey - a consequence, perhaps, of the growing popularity of Romania for beginners and families who want to learn to ski, without breaking the bank.

'Romania is now being seen by many more people as a viable alternative to the traditional Alpine resorts - so the gap in prices is narrowing.'

If you are planning a winter holiday this year, don't forget your winter sports travel insurance.

For a small cost, a winter sports policy will financially protect you on the slopes, ensuring that in an emergency situation, you will not be left with hefty bills.
