Renowned for extreme sports, New Zealand is to become the first country to host the inaugural hang gliding grand prix.

Launching (literally) in January, the event is expected to attract around 15,000 extreme sports enthusiasts as well as those who are generally curious.

Described as the Formula One of the skies, the hang gliding championship will see up to ten gliders sometimes competing just metres above the ground.

Set against the Ben Ohau Range of mountains, live coverage of races will be beamed back to spectators at the Omarama airfield in Waitaki, North Otago.

The event has been scheduled to run between January 21st and the 29th 2005, although only the last three days of the competition are open to spectators.

If the idea of watching this spectacular sport takes your fancy, make sure you take out comprehensive travel insurance before you go.

Then, if there are any unexpected accidents (ie plummeting gliders), your travel insurance policy should financially protect you.
