Package holidays offer Brits security in a turbulent world, claims new research.

Despite the growth in independent travel and backpacking, demand for package holidays has remained constant, with around19.5 million to 20 million customers, according to travel agent Thomas Cook.

The tour operator says this is because people feel they can trust larger agents to get them home in an emergency.

'Our data shows that, far from dying a death, the package holiday is experiencing something of a renaissance,' said Manny Fontenla-Nova, Thomas Cook's UK & Ireland chief executive.

'With all the recent natural disasters and also the international terrorism threat, people are really appreciating the key benefits of booking a package with a bonded travel company, namely the reassurance that if anything goes wrong, the company will endeavour to get them home as quickly as possible.'

Thomas Cook has spent over £1.7 million repatriating travellers over the last year, following disasters such as Hurricane Wilma and the Asian tsunami.

Of course this security, otherwise known as travel insurance, will only work if you don't forget to purchase it.

Travel insurance means there will be a way home for you in an emergency, and any expenses incurred should be reimbursed.
