Independent travel is becoming an increasingly popular way to holiday in Spain, according to the latest statistics from Trip Vision.

In September, around a quarter of holidays booked for Spain were part of a package deal from a travel agent and 17 per cent were packages arranged directly with the tour operator.

A third chose to book accommodation and flights directly with the provider and 26 per cent booked independent holidays through a travel agent.

The figures show that the tourism industry is changing and that many people now prefer to travel independent of package holidays. This could be because of the freedom independent travel offers and also the price discounts available.

While arranging your own holiday can be a less expensive option than booking with a travel agent, due care must be taken to ensure that you are fully insured.

While booking flights and hotels abroad, don't forget to purchase travel insurance at the same time.

Many internet travel insurance sites offer excellent deals and can provide instant travel insurance cover for those looking at a last-minute deal.

Martin Wellings, of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), told e-Tid: 'There's no doubt that the changes we are seeing in the industry to Spain will broaden out to other destinations.'
