Brits abroad who cannot speak the local language claim they are at a disadvantage compared to those who can.
According to research from Translution just under half of those polled felt preyed upon by touts in non-speaking English countries.
Two thirds feel frustration at not being able to escape well-trodden tourist trails and 76 per cent feel they miss out on interesting experiences because they can only converse in English.
Many Brits report feelings of resentment towards European travellers who receive superior treatment and lower prices.
Ted Marshall, Managing Director of Translution, said: 'Rather than the dodgy few, it is now the norm for tour operators to overcharge English speakers just to be herded along the tourist trails, while other tourists are free to enjoy hidden pleasures at a better price
He suggested that tourists take advantage of internet travel sites, where travellers can research their destination and its culture.
While you are browsing online, you may also wish to purchase your travel insurance.
Online travel insurance can represent great value for money and booking online will also enable you to compare quotes for the cheapest travel policies.
