One in two UK internet users visit a travel site at least once a month, claims new research.
Nielson/NetRatings says that travel site traffic has risen by 20 per cent from last year, suggesting that booking travel-related items through the internet is becoming the preferred way to book trips.
The figures reveal that 14 million Brits regularly click on travel sites every month with those over 50 particularly keen to book online.
'The figures for the online travel sector continue to impress but what screams out is the staggering percentage of over 50's who go online for travel,' said Alex Burmaster, the European Internet analyst at Nielson/NetRatings.
Online travel services exist for practically every travel-related facility a holidaymaker could want.
Today, you can book your flights and accommodation online, purchase online travel insurance and then read up about the country you are going to visit (on the internet, of course).
Online travel services can also sometimes be cheaper than retail agents, for example online travel insurance is often less expensive than booking travel insurance on the high street.
