Conscientious travellers are more likely to take a 'meaningful' vacation since disasters such at Boxing Day tsunami, says a new report.

The recent spate of high profile natural disasters has led people away from the beach to places where they feel they can do some good.

Opodo.co.uk claims that British travellers are now more likely to help out with conservation work, or help those less fortunate than themselves, as their consciences have been touched by TV images beamed around the world.

Two in three British travellers are more likely to buy local produce and stay at environmentally friendly hotels comapred to last year and 75 per cent strongly believe in travelling to places damaged by acts of God in order to boost the local economy.

Opodo.co.uk's Neil Mott said: 'It appears we are approaching a new era of travel and the tragic events of the last 12 months have only gone to inspire and educate people to the difference an individual can make and the guaranteed emotional rewards to this kind of travel.'

If you are travelling abroad, particularly to countries that are in turmoil, it is essential you take out travel insurance.

Travel insurance will give you peace of mind throughout your stay and ensure you aren't left with any nasty bills when you get home.
