Tourists are flocking abroad in their droves, shows new figures from the Office of National Statistics.

The number of UK residents splurging on a foreign holiday has risen by four per cent this year, compared to the same time last year.

Nearly 66 million tourists set off for sunnier climes in the 12 months ending September 2005, and visits to Western Europe and North America also rose in that time.

The figures suggest that tourists have not been put off by recent tourism attacks and spate of hurricanes.

When taking a foreign trip, it is important to take out adequate travel insurance for you and your family.

If emergency situations do arise, such as the recent Hurricane Katrina in America, any emergency medical treatment or repatriation fees should be covered by travel insurance.
