Having a little tipple is all part of a holiday for most people, but new research says that skiers should be more careful when hitting the bars.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) more than one in three over zealous skiers have experienced problems boozing it up after a day on the slopes.

Of these, 33 per cent were injured because of alcohol and 66 per cent were fined. More drastically, over half were asked to leave the resort because of their actions.

It is important to take out winter sports insurance so that if accidents happen, you are covered in the event of an emergency.

However, the FCO reminds travellers that if they are injured because of drinking too much alcohol, their travel insurance policies could be invalidated.

'If you injure yourself whilst under the influence of alcohol, it is very likely your insurance policy will be invalid,' explained the FCO's Dean Hurlock.

'This could mean high costs - if you break a leg on the Alps, a trip in an air ambulance and treatment could set you back £10,000.'
