Snowboarding is becoming a mountain phenomenon, with the sport growing in popularity amongst younger generations.

Over 1.2 million Brits are due to set off for the slopes this season and a leading insurer is warning winter sports enthusiasts to ensure they have adequate winter sports insurance, as the slopes can be a particularly perilous place for snowboarders.

Research shows that snowboarding can lead to all sorts of accidents, with boarders sustaining different injuries to skiers.

Wrists are particularly vulnerable and are the most common injury, along with broken shoulders, thumbs and arms and legs.

With the average winter sports accident claim coming in at £362, it is essential that holidaymakers check they have adequate travel insurance.

Mike Ketteringham, head of Churchill Travel Insurance, who commissioned the research, said: 'With snowboarding becoming increasingly mainstream but no less dangerous, it's important for boarders to make sure they take winter sports cover in addition to their travel insurance.

'If not, they may have to deal with some unpleasant surprises while on holiday when they really should be busy enjoying themselves.'
