Holidaying en-piste can be the adventure of a lifetime, but it is important that skiers are fully prepared before they depart for the slopes.

A leading insurer is warning skiers to check their travel insurance policies, so they know what is and isn't covered by their insurance policies, and do not invalidate cover.

Travelling off-piste, or entering competitions such as snowboarding tournaments is not covered under some policies and American Express Travel Insurance points out that bobsleigh, skeleton and ski stunting is not covered under its own winter sports policy.

It says that skis have to be locked in a rack to ensure they are covered if stolen, and people should not exceed the drink-drive limit while on the slopes.

'There are hundreds of insurance policies on the market and you need to check the terms and conditions before you travel,' said American Express Travel Insurance's Joanne Field.

She adds that with her company's policy, novice and intermediate skiers have to be accompanied by a professional.
