Machu Picchu has been named the best place on earth to visit, in a recent magazine poll.

The ancient city in Peru, South America, received double the amount of votes than any other destination, and has recently become popular with backpackers.

Wanderlust magazine revealed that the second favourite world-wonder was the temples of Angkor, Cambodia.

Taking third place is the majestic Taj Mahal, in Agra, India, which was built by one of India's sultans in memory of his late wife.

When travelling abroad, it is important to take out comprehensive travel cover. Backpacking can leave travellers vulnerable to accidents, for example staying in shared accommodation can leave people exposed to theft.

Backpacking insurance cover, developed specifically for travellers, leaves you free to get on with the exploring and not having to worry about the cost of replacing items or huge medical bills.

Lyn Hughes, Wanderlust's editor-in-chief, said: 'To explore any of these seven fully requires a great sense of adventure, but they truly represent the most amazing travel experiences on the planet'.

The most highly listed natural wonder of the world was the grand canyon, Arizona.
